The Lutheran Archives, based in Bowden, South Australia, is the official repository of historical material relating to the activities of the Lutheran Church of Australia. The Archives holds records of the present Lutheran Church as well as records of earlier Lutheran synods in Australia. These synods amalgamated to form the present day church.
Most records are available for inspection. Some records have closed or restricted access. Some private records that are less than 30 years old may not be open for research without written permission. The Lutheran Archives has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with SA Link-up.
The records held in the national Lutheran Archives span the 1800s and the first few decades in the 1900s. The records include births, baptisms and other information for Central Australian Indigenous people as well as published articles, mission reports, photographs and histories.
The Archives does not have a comprehensive catalogue of its holdings. Researchers are invited to discuss the nature of their research and the information they are seeking with the Archivist, who will endeavour to find relevant records in the collection.
A Guide to Records of Indigenous Australians in the Lutheran Archives, Adelaide, SA (published in 1999 by the Cultural Ministers Council) is a name index covering the records of Indigenous Australians from ten Lutheran Church missions in South Australia, the Northern Territory and Queensland.
