Begins with index on tabbed letter pages, giving surname, number and page number. Handwritten entries follow under printed columns on one page: (1) Date, (2) Number, (3) Name in full, (4) Age, (5) Where from, (6) When left, (7) Where gone to, (8) Married or Single, (9) Remarks. Notes on contents - (9) Remarks: Not all entries have remarks. Information more detailed by 1890s. Early remarks only record that inmate 'Left with male [or female] child'. Column sometimes includes comments on character. From 1900 it records whether woman is Protestant or Catholic and gives the birth date and name of child. Information about placement of the child is also given, such as 'with mother', 'with foster mother', 'adopted' (sometimes with names given) or 'to the orphanage'.
