The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Child Placement Principle was the new name given to the Aboriginal Child Placement Principle from 2009. That year the South Australian Child Protection Act 1993 was amended to include Torres Strait Islander children. The Principal continues to advocate for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children to be placed with their own extended families, with members of their communities or, if neither of those placements can be found, with other Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander families.
