The Mental Hospitals Act 1939 also named 'An Act to amend the Mental Hospitals Act 1858' (Act no.3&4 Geo.VI No.37) amended the Mental Hospitals Act 1858 (Act no. 22 Vict No. 22) significantly. This amendment made provision for voluntary admissions to Mental Hospitals and specifies the requirement for licences to run a Mental Hospital, and explicitly forbids people from providing 'care' or lodging any person deemed to be mentally ill for a profit without authorisation under this act. This act was repealed by Statute Law Revision Act 1958 (Act no.1958/36) on 24 July 1958.
