Melbourne City Mission [Records] is a collection held at the University of Melbourne Archives. Most of the records date from 1856 to 1974. The collection relates to the activities of the Mission since 1856, and includes client records, financial records, minutes, annual reports and superintendent files from its institutions for women and children.

Access Conditions

Access to records in this collection is restricted. Requests for access need to be made to the Heritage Service, Melbourne City Mission.

Restricted records contain personal, medical and/or sensitive information, and researchers may be required to meet special access conditions. This might include seeking permission from the person or organisation that created the records and in some cases University of Melbourne Archives will ask researchers to sign a Deed of Undertaking to protect people's privacy.

Records

The majority of Melbourne City Mission records in this collection at the University of Melbourne Archives date from 1856 to 1974. There are also two items dated 1981 and 1995 respectively.

The collection contains records such as minutes from committee meetings, annual reports, publications, financial records and staff diaries.

The collection includes some client records (including admissions registers) from these Homes that were run by Melbourne City Mission:

  • Elizabeth Fry Retreat
  • Swinborn Lodge
  • Melbourne City Mission Maternity Home, Brunswick
  • Happy Days, Black Rock
  • Melbourne City Mission Toddlers' Home, Brunswick
  • Hartnett House, Brunswick

The collection also includes records relating to other programs of Melbourne City Mission, including Sister Grace's Mission to the Friendless and Fallen, the Haven of Hope (Exhibition Street, Melbourne), and the Pilgrims Rest
Home for Aged Gentlewomen.
