Virginia Share House

Virginia Share House, at Virginia, was a family group home run by the Sisters of Mercy, Brisbane Congregation. It opened in the late 1970s and closed in late 1996. The children were moved to Avila Family Group Home. Virginia Share House reopened 20 July 1998 and in 2014 is operating as a residential facility.

The Hammond Island Mission Orphanage, on Hammond Island, was run by the the Missionaries of the Sacred Heart. It opened in 1929 and closed in January 1942, when the residents were evacuated to Cooyar. A boys’ dormitory housed the children.
