Administrative Records, Queensland Government-run Institutions is a collection of records identified in the publication Missing Pieces (2001) as being held by the Departments responsible for child welfare. Missing Pieces Describes these records as containing information about the administration of child welfare institutions including their financial and human resources, buildings and equipment. In a number of cases, documents naming some children at the institutions are included on the files. These are generally lists of children attending a particular school, or requiring clothing or dental care. The information relating to individual children on these files is rarely of a particularly personal nature. Missing Pieces did not identify clear date ranges for the records it lists. The date range given on this page is an estimate.
Access to these records is restricted in order to protect personal privacy.
Former residents wishing to access records about their time in care can contact the Right to Information Unit, Department of Child Safety, Seniors and Disability Services.
People wishing to access information about another person, e.g. a family member, require the permission of that person to access records about them.
In 2024, the Right to Information Unit, Department of Child Safety, Seniors and Disability Services advised that, while the Department does hold administrative records amongst its collection, they had not been identified in detail and as such are largely inaccessible. Individuals seeking administrative information about Queensland Government-run child welfare institutions are advised to contact Queensland State Archives instead. The Right to Information Unit can instead provide Individuals with their client files where those exist, or a Time in Care summary.
