The Anglican Diocese of Canberra and Goulburn (previously known as the Church of England Diocese of Canberra and Goulburn) was first established as a separate diocese (the Diocese of Goulburn, New South Wales) in 1863. As the new city of Canberra developed in the early twentieth century, the Diocese of Goulburn also became responsible for Church of England activities in the Australian Capital Territory. The Church of England changed its name to the Anglican Church in 1983 and the Diocese followed suit. The Diocese of Canberra and Goulburn has been responsible for a number of children’s homes in both New South Wales and the Australian Capital Territory. The Diocese manages records relating to St Saviour’s Children’s Home and Bungarimbil Boys’ Home.
The Parish Archives of the Anglican Diocese of Canberra and Goulburn include records about Diocesan Children’s Homes such as St Saviour’s in Goulburn, Bungarimbil in Tumbarumba, and possibly Birralee in Wagga Wagga. Access to these records is provided to Care Leavers through the Diocesan family history enquiries service. No charge is made for access to information from Diocesan Children’s Home records.
The research service is also provided for people seeking parish archival information and family history information (i.e. baptisms, confirmations, marriages and burials).
It is the policy of the Diocese that parishes forward completed Baptism, Marriage, Burial and Service Registers and Parish Minute Books to the Diocesan Registry office for placement with the Diocesan Collection (MS 3085) held in the National Library of Australia (NLA). There are over 2000 items held in the Diocesan Collection at the NLA. The earliest registers date from 1838.
Parish correspondence, financial records, day books or old vestments are not transferred to the NLA, and remain in the custory of the Parish.
