Brophy Memorial Hostel

Details

Brophy Memorial Hostel was established in Warrnambool in 1976 to continue the work of Father Tom Brophy to provide accommodation for boys and in 1978, girls, who could no longer live at home. From 1992 it was known as the Brophy Family and Youth Services. The hostel closed in 1994.

Brophy Memorial Hostel was incorporated in 1982 and received Government funding to provide a residential home for adolescents in 1985.

Resident numbers at Dalton Street were restricted to eight. By 1992 the Hostel comprised accommodation for eight, a two-bedroom unit and the Community Adolescent Placement Service (CAPS). CAPS provided for adolescents who were having troubles at home to spend time away from that situation with a host family in the same region so that they could continue their schooling and retain contact with their friends. The Hostel itself closed in 1994 as it became too expensive to run.
