Moorlands, in Auchenflower, was a children’s hostel run by Brisbane Legacy. The first children moved in in July 1946 and its official opening was in February 1947. It could accommodate 30 to 40 children, aged between 7 and 20. The first Matron was Moya Nettlefield. It closed in 1972.
The Senate described Moorlands in a 2005 report:
It accommodated total orphans, children whose mothers were unable to look after them, children from country areas who came to Brisbane for educational purposes including undertaking apprenticeships and children seeking emergency accommodation when, for example, their mother was in hospital (Senate, 2005).
A publication from 1968 stated that children at Moorlands attended Taringa State school and ‘appropriate denominational schools and secondary schools’ (Social Services Queensland, 1968, p.92).
The Methodist Church bought the property in 1971 and the Wesley Hospital opened on the site in 1977, in the grounds behind the house.
