The New South Wales Stolen Generations Reparations Scheme was established in 2017. It was created in response to the New South Wales government’s 2016 report, Unfinished Business, which recommended that a reparations scheme be established.
The Stolen Generations Reparations Scheme provided ex-gratia payments of $75,000 to “living Stolen Generations survivors who were removed by, committed to, or otherwise came into the care of the New South Wales Aborigines Protection or Welfare Boards under the Aborigines Protection Act 1909, up until the Act was repealed on 2 June 1969”.
A funeral assistance fund was also available and provided a one-off payment of $7000 to Stolen Generations survivors to assist with the cost of funerals.
Applicants could also request an apology from a representative of the New South Wales government.
The Scheme was administered by Aboriginal Affairs NSW. The Scheme accepted new applications until June 2023, with late applications closing on 29 March 2024.
