Outbreaks of diseases like ophthalmia in institutions led to infected children being moved to Point Nepean, for example in April 1867, when over 100 children travelled on the steamer Pharos from Melbourne to Point Nepean. By mid 1867, 250 children were housed at the Sanatory Station.
