The Anglican Church of Australia is a community of Christians scattered across Australia. It was previously known as the Church of England in Australia. The Anglican Church in Queensland ran a number of homes for children and young people. The Diocese of Brisbane is one of three dioceses in Queensland, together with North Queensland and Rockhampton. It is also known as the Anglican Church, Southern Queensland.

The Diocese of Brisbane was created in 1859 by Queen Victoria who appointed Edward Tufnell as the first diocesan bishop.

Edward Castell Osborn was ordained deacon and priest by the Archbishop of Brisbane in 1878 and served his first curacy at Warwick from 1878 to 1881. He was the Archdeacon of Toowoomba and Wide Bay and Residentary Canon of St. John’s Cathedral, Brisbane. Parishes at which Achdeacon Osborn served as Rector were St. Paul’s, Roma (1881-1886), St. Andrew’s, Gympie (1887-1889) and St. Andrew’s, Lutwyche (1890-1920). Osborn was on the management committee for the Boys’ Home, Wooloowin and Enoggera Boys’ Home.

The Diocese of Brisbane includes an area of more than half a million square kilometres and is home to more than two million Queenslanders. The community is served by 467 clergy and 305 churches.In 2012, the Diocese of Brisbane was led by Archbishop Dr Phillip Aspinall, who is also Australia’s Primate.
