Anglicare, established 1997, is the urban mission and community care arm of the Anglican Diocese of Sydney. It dates back to the Home Mission Society of the Anglican Diocese of Sydney, established in 1856. Anglicare provides a range of community services and programs across the Sydney metropolitan and Illawarra regions of New South Wales.

When Anglicare was formed in 1997, a section called Anglicare Child and Family Services took over the children’s, youth and disability services that had previously been provided by Care Force. It was under the umbrella of Anglicare Welfare Services. Its name changed again in 2008, to Anglicare Out-of-Home Care Services. Anglicare Out-of-Home Care Services provides adoption services, foster care, the Lisgar Youth Support Program and Paul Street Adolescent Residential Program.

Anglicare is the custodian of the records of a number of children’s Homes and other institutions, including those Homes run by the Home Mission Society, Church of England Homes, Charlton Youth Services, Care Force and Carramar Adoption AgencyIt holds records relating to children and young people in foster care, and youth and adolescent support programmes, as well as Anglicare adoption records dating back to around 1960.

The Anglicare collection includes historical records relating to the activities of the Anglican (or Church of England) Diocese of Sydney, which developed and supported a number of committees that ran children’s Homes and programmes in the Sydney metropolitan area from the late 19th century until the present. Access to these records is provided by Anglicare’s Care Leavers Records and Archives, established in 2014. Access to adoption records is provided by Anglicare Adoption Services.
