Broughton Lodge was a hostel run by the Church of England for girls from the country attending school in Geraldton. Broughton Lodge opened in 1942, initially taking in non-Aboriginal girls from rural areas, and from 1953 taking in Aboriginal girls only. In addition to their school work girls at the hostel received domestic training. Aboriginal children were known to have been placed at Broughton Lodge by the Department of Native Welfare between 1954 and 1955. It is not known exactly when Broughton Lodge closed, however it is possible that it closed in 1958 following the death of the manager.
Broughton Lodge was temporarily closed for 1952 whilst the manager (who was the sole manager of Broughton Lodge throughout it’s operation) spent time in England. Following her return in 1953 Broughton Lodge was re-opened as a hostel for Aboriginal girls, however, according to the 1954 Annual Report of the Commissioner of Native Affairs, the first girls did not arrive until February 1954.
