The Brunswick Girls’ Home was established by the Salvation Army in 1892. It was situated in Albion Street, Brunswick.
The matron’s report to the department in 1893 stated:
We have to report a very good year’s work at this Reformatory. A steady work has gone on among the varied characters we have had to deal with, and in many instances we are pleased to say that a marvellous change has taken place in the lives and dispositions of some of the girls. While we had a good deal of trouble with some at certain times, still on the whole the discipline and conduct of the girls has been all that we could expect. Special care has been taken to train the girls in all kinds of domestic duties, so that many of them who have gone from us are giving every satisfaction in their situations. We are also training some of them to use the woollen knitting machine, and trust that the knowledge thus gained will be helpful to them in days to come.
In 1897 some girls from the Brunswick home were transferred to the newly opened Pakenham Girls’ Reformatory. The Brunswick Girls’ Home closed in 1902, with some girls being transferred to the Glenroy Girls’ Home, and others being transferred to the Riddell’s Creek Girl’s Home.
