City of Canning Youth Accommodation Service

Details

The City of Canning Youth Accommodation Service was established in 1994. Since that time it has provided medium-term supported accommodation for young people aged between 15 and 25 years. In 2021, it continued to offer supported accommodation for 16-21 year olds for up to twelve months.

The City of Canning Youth Accommodation Service began in 1994, providing supported, medium-term accommodation for up to seven young people aged 15-25 years which reportedly (Signposts, 2004 pp.597-598), was targeted to assist those who were homeless or at imminent risk of homelessness. By 2001, young people aged 15-21 years were accommodated through the service. All accommodation was provided within the City of Canning but the service accepted referrals from all metropolitan areas. In 2004 the service could accommodate up to 10 young people. In 2012, the service provided medium to long-term accommodation for young people aged 16-21 years.

The City of Canning Youth Accommodation Service was funded through the Youth Supported Accommodation Program (YSAAP) from 1994 to 2009, and has subsequently received funding through the National Affordable Housing Agreement (NAHA). Although all accommodation is provided within the City of Canning, the service will accept referrals from all metropolitan areas.

In 2021, the City of Canning described the service as offering shared supported housing for up to 12 months through five furnished properties. Youth workers were available to provide support to young people in accommodation during office hours, but did not live at the properties.
