Hurlingham

Details

Hurlingham was established by The Carry On Club Victoria in Brighton in 1946. It accommodated ‘under-privileged boys aged 10-16 who were the sons of ex-servicemen and women’, including some wards of state. Hurlingham was closed in 1963.

In 1955, the Carry On Club of Victoria applied for the ‘Carry On Club Home “Hurlingham”‘ to be declared an approved children’s home under the Children’s Welfare Act 1954 and it was gazetted in January 1956.

An undated brochure (around the 1940s) appealing for funds for the institution described the welfare work of the Carry On Club, which had 3 divisions: social welfare, vocational welfare and youth welfare, which included the boys’ Home, which was said to be for “sons of servicemen … who had not the benefit of happy home surroundings”. Hurlingham boys “could be given a chance to readjust their outlook on life in a pleasant and kindly atmosphere”.

The brochure described the Home’s spacious and planned grounds, tennis court, gymnasium and hobbies’ room. “By means of the hobbies’ room, library, and personal contact between boys and principal, individual interests and aptitudes are encouraged and developed, and a foundation laid for the role each boy will play in later life” (“‘Hurlingham’: a ‘Carry On’ Club project“, available online at State Library Victoria).
