Lisgar Hostel

Details

Lisgar Hostel at Arncliffe was a hostel for young women operated by the Church of England Deaconess Institution (now known as Anglican Deaconess Ministries) from 1953. It was initially located in the grounds of the Pallister Girls’ Home on River Road, Greenwich, however following a fire in 1955 it relocated to Knight Street, Arncliff, where it reopened in 1959. In 1986 Lisgar Hostel was taken over by Anglicare and the premises were converted to a community care programme. From that time Lisgar stopped providing residential accommodation.

Lisgar Hostel was operated by Church of England Deaconess Ministries Ltd from 1953. In the 1980s the Deaconesses changed their name to Anglican Deaconess Ministries Ltd but continued to run Lisgar Hostel until 1986, when it was handed to Anglicare.

Since 1986, Lisgar has been the name of a community care programme run by Anglicare Welfare Services, based at Hurstville.

Records of Lisgar are held by Anglicare’s Child Youth and Family Services Department and are located in Anglicare Out-of-Home Care Services at Telopea.
