Glossary terms starting with the letter I:

  • Illegitimacy – Illegitimacy was the status given to children born to unmarried parents.
  • In Moral Danger – In Moral Danger (sometimes abbreviated as IMD) was a term in common use in government departments and welfare agencies in the twentieth century.
  • Industrial School – Industrial Schools were nineteenth century institutions where children could receive industrial training.
  • Infant Life Protection – Infant Life Protection laws required the registration of anyone taking in a child under the age of two.
  • Informal Placement of Aboriginal Children – The informal placement of Aboriginal children, supposedly for a temporary period, was frequently the beginning of a permanent separation from their family and community.
  • Institutional Care – Institutional care is a term that refers to the system of residential care for children, generally in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.
