The Normal School, opened in 1850 on the corner of Pedder and Carlton Streets, New Town. It was designed to offer an academic education to boys and good quality teacher training. Teachers also took classes with the boys at the Queen's Orphan Asylum. The Legislative Council refused to fund the School and it closed in 1852. Ten years later, the Hobart Town Female Refuge opened in the same building. It later became the Industrial School for Girls - Hobart.
