The farm school was a model of 'care' for children, similar to the 'village' model, but based in a rural area, and involving training for the children in agricultural duties. Farm schools usually comprised a number of cottages in which children lived with cottage parents. Children placed in farm schools like Tally Ho in Burwood had often been 'rescued' from the inner city 'slums' of Melbourne.
